Cute French Boys

I got my wish for a Springtime honeymove to Paris, and spent a week reveling in unseasonably warm weather.

I couldn’t resist snapping this photo so you could admire the season’s first daffodils and a pair of cute Frenchies in the Marais (by the way – available and looking for dates!).

Springtime Paris Boys

My week included speaking at a conference on sustainable fashion. Indeed, French women are in love with all things natural and bio (organic).

My friend Sylvie sent me to her favorite bio spot, Cococook.

Cococook Boutique

It features lots of organic, whole foods with creative spins. Lentil and goat cheese salad with a red onion compote and arugula, mint and orange rice paper spring rolls, triple lemon cake, green tea panacotta,…you get the picture!

While you’re there, be sure to get yourself and your kiddies these adorable stickers – trop mignon!

Not only are Parisiennes eating their organic fare, they’re also having a blast turning it into all sorts of creams and potions. At Aroma-Zone, you can take classes to learn how to make your own lotions and balms – like almond honey scrubs, mandarin-royal jelly masks, and shiny walnut hair smoothies.

Time to let your hair down, sip a green juice and welcome Spring!

One Lucky Duck and Three Little Chicks

I’m just finishing up my holiday shopping and can’t resist sharing my finds. If you’re looking for last minute gift ideas, you’re in luck!

  • One Lucky Duck is my favorite resource for delicious edibles. Everything’s raw and organic, but the chocolate truffles, nut butters and spicy cashews will delight anyone, no matter what their eating style.
  • Mary’s Gone Crackers: while we’re on the subject of ducks, here’s a great resource for wheat-free, gluten-free and organic baked goods.
  • Three little chicks: what could be cutier than gifting little baby chicks? Rest assured, you won’t get actual chicks. They are a symbolic gift through Women for Women International. Baby chicks are used to produce eggs that women can sell at market to support their families.

But I must admit I’ve been naughty, as I also picked something up for myself. I signed up on Women for Women to sponsor a woman survivor of war who is rebuilding her life. I figure she has a thing or two to teach me about resilience and hope.

Where are you shopping this year? Please share your ideas!

New York, you just keep me coming back for more

Everyone’s moving to New York. Ok, well maybe not everyone, but a lot of cool French people have recently decided to call the Big Apple home. There’s fashion’s first blogger Garance Doré, soccer star Thierry Henry, Oppos-It girl Victoire de Taillac, and Caudalie owners Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas, to name a few.

I’ve long thought New York is a city where you can have your croissant and eat it to. You can eat French, watch French TV and even send your kids to French school, provided you’re lucky enough to get a spot. And, you can simultaneously take advantage of New York’s unbridled energy, opportunities and creativity.

And get your butt kicked. New York’s not a walk in the park. It’s tough love – the only kind that keeps you coming back for more.

New York or Paris? Paris or New York? What’s better? Personally, I’m happiest mid-Atlantic on an Air France flight watching a French romcom and sipping champagne.

It’s September 11, so in honor of our new French expats, and in honor of New York’s resilience, here are three things you can only get in Manhattan:

1. Central Park. It’s so big, there’s always a new path to discover. You can lose yourself in the woods and re-emerge for a Belgian hot chocolate at the Pain Quotidien in Sheep Meadow.

2. Anything, anytime. The city’s open 24/7 and your wish is our command. Very spoiling and not conducive to any kind of planning ahead. At Juvenex, you can actually get a massage at 3 a.m.

3. Total reinvention. This is Lady Gaga’s hometown after all. You can be almost anything or learn a new trade, waiter by day, actress by night. Check out the Open Center’s mind and soul-expanding classes or learn to eat clean at the Natural Gourmet Institute.

The Big Apple has taken more than its fair share of beatings, but it’s still the Place to Be. It may have a few bruises, but you can never take away its bite.

New York, you’ll always keep me coming back for more.

Spring style and delectable finds

Whether the sun is shining, or it’s pouring rain, swapping out Winter’s dark layers for the light, bright shades of Spring puts a smile on your face. A favorite sundress or a new lipstick lifts your mood as quickly as a good espresso enjoyed outside on a first sunny morning.

But more than a burst of color to brighten your day, finding your personal style, that look that translates your sensibilities to the outside world, is an integral part of your sense of épanoui. Little personal touches here and there can make you feel like a million bucks.

This season features tried and true trends – military, florals, little white dresses – along with simple, bold new shapes orchestrated by designers such as Phoebe Philo at Céline and Christophe Decarnin at Balmain. There’s a nice, neutral palette at work (white, beige, khaki, denim) offering the ideal backdrop for your favorite colors and personal accessories.

The couture-inspired collections at retailers such as Zara (zara.com) freshen up your closet without breaking the bank.

Here’s a grab bag of ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

1. Play with prints.

My addiction to prints started the evening my mother slipped into her Yves Saint Laurent black crepe evening dress strewn with red half moons. Prints are so good at inviting you to take a second look, losing yourself in the swirls, the patterns and the colors.

Kate Sheldon Dubas, former Couture buyer for Neiman Marcus, and President and CEO of Fashioneering, LLC explains, “prints are personal.” Rely on them to convey a particular mood or sensibility and add interest to your look.

Kate and I loved the Liberty collection for Target recently (target.com). The patterns, design, quality and pricing add up to a noteworthy collection. It’s not too late to scoop up some clothes and homeware on line.

You can also get your dose of Liberty from M.A.C.’s new Spring make-up collection Give Me Liberty (maccosmetics.com). What a day-brightener to get out a peacock and flower-printed lipstick case instead of the usual black!

2. Imagine yourself on the beaches of Normandy.

Since it was sent down the runway with bold shoulders and sequined embroidery, the sailor stripe is having another moment. Whether you opt for the classic or the embellished, it’s a fool-proof Spring staple.

Coco Chanel was the first to turn a traditional fisherman’s jersey into a relaxed, seaside look appropriate for the ladies who lounged in Deauville, the still chic seaside resort in Normandy.

J. Crew has partnered with the Saint James knit company (based in Normandy since 1889) to offer their authentic, nautical tee this season, a unisex version in navy or white (jcrew.com).

3. Discover some mouth-watering finds.

The easiest way I’ve stumbled upon to brighten my day this season are Chanel’s new Rouge Coco lipsticks. It was hard not to be tempted by the gorgeous ad campaign featuring French actress and chanteuse Vanessa Paradis (also wife to Johnny Depp in one of the best French-American unions going).

After wearing lip gloss for so long, I’m rediscovering the pleasure of feeling like a femme fatale. Just be sure to pick a color which works with your skin’s undertones. The queen of wearable make-up Bobbi Brown advises choosing a color near to that of your own lips.

A shot of color on your lips, what about a bright bag on your hips? Designer Jérôme Dreyfuss opened his first stateside boutique in Soho a few weeks ago. He does color the way only the Europeans know how, offering eye-catching hues that are still chic (473 Broome St., New York, 212 334 6920, jerome-dreyfuss.com).

Bouquets aren’t meant for wearing, but it’s impossible to resist the temptation of dressing up the living room with a bright bunch of blooms. Caroline Bailly’s L’Atelier Rouge in Soho takes floral and event design to a new level (270 Lafayette St., New York, 212 226 4636, latelierrouge.com ).

If these Spring ideas have gotten your mouth watering, or you need a new lunch idea, pay a visit to mid-town East eatery Delectica. This neighborhood cafe features fresh, quality ingredients with a Mediterranean spin (564 Third Ave., New York, 212 986 1616, delectica.com).

Starting this Saturday, April 10, Delectica will be showing the food photographs Leslie Kobrin captured during her past year of travel in Paris, London and Seoul (thel-list.com). Her goal is to transport you out of your daily routine for a moment of visual enjoyment and maybe leave you a little hungry along the way…

Lunchtime in Paris

Lunchtime in Paris means all the bistros and self-service places (“un self,” for short in French) buzz with activity. Contrary to American eateries, most self-service restaurants feature ample sitting or standing room. Spilling crumbs and salad dressing all over one’s keyboard doesn’t seem too civilized.

A recent trip to Paris unearthed a new crop of inspired eateries featuring fresh, natural food and the comforts of home. Check out my irresistible finds below, or as we say in French, my coups de cœur.

If you’re not headed to Paris anytime soon, use your lunch break for a mini-breather. Sit-up tall, close your e-mail, take a few deep breaths. Let yourself be soothed by your chewing rhythm and pay attention to your food’s flavors and textures. Conjure up the feeling you get snuggling in your bed, laying in the sand or walking along the banks of the Seine. Enjoy a moment of respite, without leaving your chair.

  • La Ferme

new locations opening in Paris (8ème arr., La Défense)

La Ferme (the farm) brings a little bit of chic countryside to Paris’s busiest neighborhoods. You can grab and go or luxuriate in the light-filled seating area, complete with interior garden.

La Ferme offers creative fare such as soba duck salad, vanilla chicken with olive salsa tabouleh and veggie crumbles.

Kitchen Galerie Bis, Paris

Lest you forget you’re in France, the drinks section features glasses of organic and bio-dynamic wines, along with an exhaustive selection of temptations like raspberry verbena splash.

  • Le Salon

13, rue Victor Cousin

75005 Paris

Tel. + 33 1 56 24 88 80 (reserve ahead)

www.cinemadupantheon.fr

Le Salon sits atop an art house movie theater, a stone’s throw away from the historic Panthéon, where French “national heroes” like Voltaire and Marie Curie are buried. This is not only a place to go for the food, but also for the people. The crowd captures that uniquely Paris-blend of intellect meets chic meets nonchalance.

As my friend and I sank back into a comfy couch to enjoy lunch, I felt like we were hanging out in my fantasy home. The loft-like space, complete with garden balcony, is artfully decorated by French screen legend Catherine Deneuve.

Le Salon offers a simple selection of fresh foods – plats du jour, soups, Spanish-style tortillas or charcuterie, and combo plates of daily salads to mix and match (quinoa tabouleh, bibb lettuce with marinated peppers and sardines, coriander carrots, eggplant confit…). End your meal with a fresh ginger and lemon infusion.

  • Kitchen Galerie Bis (KGB)

25, rue des Grands Augustins

75006 Paris

Tel. + 33 1 46 33 00 85 (reserve ahead)

zekitchen-galerie.fr

KGB is the budget-friendlier, little sister version of Ze Kitchen Galerie, a French fusion restaurant which has been a Parisian favorite for years.

We wanted to take a British guest for something beyond traditional French cuisine. KGB mixes fresh market finds with the mouth-watering flavors of the Far East (Asian-style bouillon with foie gras, duck confit with house-made pasta and Asian herbs, a delicate, addictive mango-passion fruit cappuccino.) The colorful, modern space hung with contemporary art puts you in a sunny mood, even if it’s a typically gray Parisian day.

What are your favorite lunch places in Paris?
